WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE ABROAD?
My most memorable experience abroad occurred in the Philippines. My friends and I were visiting Mactan Island, a small village outside of a major tourist city in Cebu. Walking on the main street we saw ramshackle houses and local kids were trying to sell us knick-knacks. As we approached this caged gymnasium we heard bumping music. We walked in and witnessed a local dance competition of boys 8-28 on the island. It was like Mactan Island’s Best Dance Crew. The groups’ dances were perfectly coordinated with kids doing flips on the hard floor. The local crowd were going crazy.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS ABROAD AND WHY?
My favorite class abroad was Economics of China. Before traveling to Hong Kong I had limited knowledge about the economics of China. As China’s economy continues to grow and the country emerges from its industrialist state, the importance of understanding their economic path is more significant.
HOW WAS YOUR LIVING ARRANGEMENT?
I lived in a great apartment, close to the two major neighborhoods in Hong Kong. I shared a two-bedroom apartment with another student and we also had a kitchen a living room and two bathrooms.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE CITY?
My favorite part of the city was Mid-Levels. This part of the city is on a mountain so instead of merely hiking there is a huge escalator that takes you up. There are great restaurants and has a very good vibe.
HOW DID YOU LIKE THE STAFF?
The staff were great. Joffre, the director of the Hong Kong Center, was my Cantonese teacher. She was extremely supportive, approachable, but also demanded respect. The students and the staff all became fairly close due to the many field trips and organized activities.
